Being taken seriously in the workplace requires more than simply showing up and performing specific jobs. For women, being taken seriously – especially in a more physically difficult, or higher-paying job – is much more difficult than it is for men. Not only does a woman’s workplace performance need to be taken into account, so does her wardrobe.
Dressing for success takes more effort than simply putting on an outfit that looks good. Women need to take many factors into consideration, including the environment, climate, the position that they hold, and their company’s guidelines. There are many different ways for women to dress so that they look – and feel – confident, but there are also a few general things to keep in mind.
Ensuring that the outfit is “work appropriate” is a must. Skirts and dresses should be of a suitable length, and shirts and pants should not be too tight or revealing. Dressing up is nice; dressing cheap is not. As with acceptable clothing, shoes must also be functional and appropriate; not all workplaces are the right venue for six inch stilettos, no matter how cute they happen to be. Dressing appropriately will ensure that the only thing that coworkers and supervisors take notice of is how well a job is being performed, and will help to keep someone’s appearance from distracting those around them.
Keeping a workplace look appropriate does not mean that an outfit has to be boring or extremely conservative. There are many color, print and style options to choose from that will keep even the most “normal” of looks fresh and exciting. Expressing personality through dress is an important part of making a name for yourself in the workplace, and can help people to understand more about an individual – but the work a person does, and not the way she dresses should define her.
